Historic Turner Residence

The Turner House, an eclectic home with Queen Anne influences, includes a large two-story turreted tower, a sweeping limestone front porch, wooden clad interiors, and seven fireplaces. The home was originally built for Edward H Turner and then was later owned by the co-founder of Nabisco National Biscuit Company, Adolphus W Green.
Farr Associates, working with J&L Architects, is renovating the residence with upgraded interior systems, added building insulation, all-electric utility service, and healthy materials such as locally-fabricated millwork, and Red-List free low- to no-VOC finishes and materials.

Located in Chicago’s Historic Kenwood District, the residence was designed by architect Solon S. Beman and built in 1888 for Edward Turner.
The Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The existing wood paneling on most first floor rooms brings the charm and we loathe to damage it further. Insulation will be added inboard only where no historic detailing exists, providing coverage to roughly 65% of the structure. This building already includes a triple-wythe masonry exterior wall with plaster on wood framing. Spray insulation, although not the best from a material composition standpoint, reduces air leakage and provides a mostly continuous insulation envelope without changing the exterior or interior appearance of the home. Replacing the windows with low-e, fiberglass windows further reduce heat losses.
