To Matthew, buildings are not just buildings: they are spaces that represent the first phase of change. To construct or enhance a building is to immediately improve its site, which invariably boosts the integrity of the place: its streets, community, and city. Beginning with buildings and ending with entire neighborhoods, Matthew’s career thrives at the intersection of a variety of disciplines, including user-centered design, research, and advocacy. In his current role as Associate Principal, Matthew is pushing the boundaries of sustainable, equitable design on projects and initiatives aimed at preserving the environment and enhancing the impact for underserved populations.

Matthew’s zeal for design is matched by the accountability he feels towards the earth, and to his fellow humans. From affordability to equity, Matthew strives to work on projects that identify specific issues and address them, head-on. Believing wholeheartedly in environmental stewardship and transparency in praxis, Matthew has carried Farr Associates from preacher to practitioner, spearheading the firm’s change in designation to both a Benefit Corporation and a JUST organization.

His fervor for leadership, and his proven devotion to equity and a sustainable future represent what the world needs most right now – passions turned into practice.

Matthew is a co-facilitator of the Chicago Living Building Collaborative and was honored as the AIA Chicago Dubin Family Young Architect of the Year in 2018.
