DES PLAINES UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT ORDINANCE

The City of Des Plaines engaged Farr Associates to write a form-based code for their diverse suburban community.  The result is a Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) with form-based zoning regulations to preserve and enhance the City’s unique character. The code, which combines zoning and subdivision regulations into one document, includes a variety of commercial and residential building types that mix well with existing neighborhood fabric. A strong downtown core with transit oriented development and a community-wide network of open spaces are also code priorities. All sections of the code, including those that outline standards for building types, street types, open space, signage, site development, and subdivision, contribute to a walkable, sustainable community.
